Let's avoid mediocrity in tech prep

Article Abstract:

Some pitfalls encountered by the State Technical Institute at Memphis, TN, when it developed technical preparatory curricula in 1991 are reported. The most significant obstacle to genuine improvement in students was mediocrity. Substandard work is accepted and even praised, becauseof the fear of hurting student self-esteem with harsh criticism. Articulation efforts were also a source of mediocrity because they neglected to strengthen high school curricula in mathematics, science, social studies and English. Students in technical preparatory school were thus given credit for high schoolsubjects that they have not really mastered.

The four P's of marketing tech prep

Article Abstract:

Technical preparation (tech prep) provides several benefits but people will have to be informed about them. Strategies to achieve this goal include marketing tech prep as a product, choosing an appropriate venue for tech prep education, explaining the price of tech prep participation and embarking on promotional strategies about the educational program. Tech prep trains students various skills which provide them with more career choices and long-term career possibilities. Its programs should be made more accessible to students and its advantages can only be emphasized through a concerted effort by its practitioners.
