Liberte takes back seat as scholars told: think 'positive'

Article Abstract:

Historians in France have called for the repeal of a new law that prescribes how historians should research and teach the issue of French colonialism in North Africa. The law places conditions on any research and requires school history courses to place an emphasis on the positive aspects of France's colonial past. The historians contend that such Government interference is unacceptable, while Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has noted that it borders on revisionism.

Liberte, egalite and a few Polish plumbers

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the political debate that took place in France ahead of the referendum on whether or not to accept the European Union constitution. It is contended that much of the debate had little to do with the wider issues of Europe and more to do with the domestic issues, such as unemployment, that are currently troubling France.
