Libraries lose their shelf life

Article Abstract:

The use of library networking and information technology as a means of allowing libraries to cope with growing user demands and static funding is the subject of the Electronic Libraries (eLIB) programme of research projects which has received funding of 15 million pounds sterling over three years. Ten of the 37 eLib projects announced by mid-November 1995 have the development of novel forms of journal as their goal, while two involve the digitising of existing material. Seven projects are concerned with on-demand publishing of books, and four with electronic delivery of existing electronic documents.

It's going to be Massive

Article Abstract:

Research involving the use of virtual reality in remote education is under way in Nottingham, England, and Stockholm, Sweden. The goal of the Massive project at Nottingham University is to build and evaluate a virtual conference world. The project is particularly concerned with determining the minimum representation necessary for effective interaction. The Dive project at the Swedish Institute of Computer Science in Stockholm is concerned with developing virtual tools for manipulating the virtual world. Massive and Dive will both operate over ISDN rather than an ordinary telephone line.

Adventures with form and format

Article Abstract:

There is concern amongst scientists that scientific papers marking important discoveries are appearing in electronic formats rather than scientific journals. If they are written for this format, they are only read by some members of the scientific community who have access to the database and are not refereed. There is concern that technological developments will continue to happen ahead of legal and administrative means of allowing access to information.
