Lives on the rocks

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the findings of the annual work-life balance survey conducted for The THES and Natfhe, lecturers' union, which revealed that academics suffer from higher levels of stress than professionals from other walks of life, and therefore have greater levels of ill-health, drink more, have less sex and cause more serious professional errors. Reasons for this high level of stress are given - such as a heavy workload, a high level of external scrutiny and major funding cuts - and it is argued that jobs in academia carry too high a personal price.

We must deny bullies a pulpit

Article Abstract:

Twenty-two percent of over 300 lecturers surveyed in England claimed to have been a victim of bullying, with a similar claim made by 18% of 800 lecturers surveyed in Wales. Some bullies manipulate information to ensure their staff will fail, they may isolate lecturers, undermine their self-confidence and criticize them to humiliate and devalue them. Some bullies feel threatened by colleagues or may seek to improve their own self-worth by devaluing others. Many bullies in universities suffer from stress and use bullying as a management technique.

Bullying rife across campus

Article Abstract:

Bullying is common in the higher education sector, affecting both administration and academic workers, according to the biggest ever survey of the problem. Petra Boynton, a psychologist at University College London who led the survey, stated that those surveyed believed that nothing is being done to deal with the problem and that bullies are seen to be getting away with their actions.
