MPs savage white paper proposals

Article Abstract:

MPs in the United Kingdom have torn into the government's higher education white paper, which was released in January 2003, with the release of a report by the cross-party education and skills select committee which criticises ministers for the limitations of their vision for higher education. Recommendations and conclusions contained within the report include full fee remission for poor students; the introduction of maintenance grants of up to UKPd5,000/yr to be paid for by an increase in the interest rate on student loans; doubts about plans go award university titles to institutions that have no research degree-awarding powers and an higher education levy on business.

Do we need the 50% target?

Article Abstract:

The issues that the UK government needs to address in its upcoming higher education strategy paper are examined if the target of 50% participation in higher education by 2010 is to be achieved. Whether or not the 50% target is needed is also addressed. To reach the government?s target, it is estimated that around 400,000 more students will be needed, taught by around 17,000 extra lecturers. Currently, 41% of people in the UK enter higher education for the first time when they are aged between 18-30 years old.
