'It's surprising that the government ever proposed differential fees. What one would have predicted for our system is underfunded uniformity'

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the predictability of the beliefs held by unions - teachers' and lecturers' unions in particular - and the similar predictability of their reactions to the government's plans for top-up fees for universities. It is argued that the way in which the unions and the universities are responding to the government's proposals is in fact hypocritical and do not deal with the real problems that exist within the higher education system

'Many agonise over the development of organised "sub-groups" of universities--Russell, Mainstream, 1994 and so on. I think that they signal salvation'

Article Abstract:

An analysis of special interest groups, their political influence and the role they play in higher education. It is argued that higher education needs more special interest groups, all actively lobbying the government over often nonsensical education policy and trying to get things changed for the better.
