Masters of the patent game

Article Abstract:

Chief executive of the Cancer Research Campaign's technology transfer arm, CRC Technology (CRCT), Sue Foden, explains that CRCT has had to change what it does to reflect the way both science and the business has changed. Foden explains that CRCT is responsible for ensuring that developments in research that could advance cancer knowledge and might be patentable and exploitable are not lost. CRCT is now presented with targets and the beginnings of a drug, rather than with molecules. Foden describes CRCT as financially quite healthy, its income having grown rapidly to reach 3.5 million pounds sterling in 1996/97.

An inside job or a set-up?

Article Abstract:

A CIBA Foundation conference to be held in London is to discuss the genetics of anti-social and criminal behaviour. The issue is illustrated by the case of Tony Mobeley, who was sentenced to death for murder, but who is now claiming that his genes made him kill John Collins. Mobeley has demanded a scientific test to prove it and a final decision is to be made by the Georgia supreme court shortly. The subject of biological predisposition to crime is discussed further.
