Melbourne's private affair ends in red ink

Article Abstract:

Melbourne University Private (MUP), the first private university in Australia to be established by a public institution is to close with losses of at least A$20 million. When it was launched by the University of Melbourne in 1997, it was predicted that MUP would attract 10,000 student from Australia and around the world and generate over A$200 million/yr. MUP will now merge with its parent and its students will finish their courses there.

Private colleges get loans boost

Article Abstract:

The number of private higher education institutions in Australia is rapidly increasing as the federal Government has extended its system of deferred loans to cover their students. Prior to January 2005, private universities had been unable to offer the sort of deferred loans available to students at universities in the public sector.

V-cs's body in line for makeover

Article Abstract:

The Australian Vice-Chancellor's Committee (AVCC) will be reorganised into a new company with a different name, new governing board and revamped management structure. Reforms were prompted by growing evidence that the AVCC was no longer an effective political force.
