'Much of the world (including the US) lives quite happily with a system in which lecturers are judge and jury... with no outside oversight'
Article Abstract:
The university examination system in the UK is markedly different to the system used by much of the rest of the world. In the UK, the aim is to monitor and standardise university performance whereas in most other countries lecturers are responsible for teaching and marking, with little or no outside oversight. It is contended that the UK has gotten things wrong and should accept that it is nearly impossible to deliver an uniform product in a field such as higher education.

Turn classes into labs of learning for lecturers
Article Abstract:
British and US universities share a weakness in that they make little effort to improve ways in which students are educated. Faculty members and universities rarely assess how much students are learning or try to find new ways to help students accomplish more.
