Mullahs and kulaks -- he would bin them all: forty years ago E.H. Carr published 'What is History?' Richard J. Evans considers the influence this former journalist had on historical thought and how he might view history in the making today

Article Abstract:

Despite not holding an advanced degree in history, E.H. Carr published "What is History?', a book collected from his travelling lectures 40 years ago. Carr had a realist view of foreign relations that would have acknowledged the world dominance of the US, much like he acknowledged the Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia in his day. His rationalist tendencies would make him unsympathetic to religious fanatics like those zealots that comprise Afghanistan's Taliban movement.
