Article Abstract:

A dispute has arisen over the accreditation of philosophy academics from Paris Vlll University, France. The university was set up as an experimental project after 1968. The national universities council (CNU) has to qualify candidates submitted by universities for posts. The CNU has rejected the four Paris Vlll candidates. Paris Vlll decided against making the appointments regardless of the CNU decision due to the legal problems which could have arisen.

Article Abstract:

Trinh Xuan Thuan is an astrophysicist teaching at the University of Virginia. He specialises in extragalactic astronomy and is course Astrophysics for the Poets teachs humanities students about telescopes as machines for travelling back in time, and the role of speed of light in the theory of relativity. He believes that real advances in knowledge are made by working something out with the brain and a pencil, rather than on a computer screen.

Isabelle Stengers switched from science to philosophy after experiencing doubt. The Belgian obtained a masters degree in chemistry, before studying philosophy. The change was triggered by Arthur Koestler's philosophy. Stengers believes science can threaten society, when it replaces public opinion.
