New data, same story

Article Abstract:

Some university courses are becoming more popular, such as computer science, whilst teacher training courses had a 13% dip in applications. The number of women entering university has increased to 53% of entrants in 1999. British working class children are still finding it as difficult to gain admission to universities as they did in 1962, when only 2% of children from semi and unskilled working class families went to university. There is some evidence the number of children from more affluent backgrounds applying to universities declined to 20.81% in 1999 from 20.87% in 1998.

1964 revisited: lessons from the history of Mr Poly

Article Abstract:

The UK's polytechnics, which were created by the Labour government elected in Oct 1964 and acquired university status under the 1992 Further and Higher Education Act, had a significant impact on higher education. They formed the basis for the system of mass higher education within which the new Labour government must now operate, and established a higher education tradition focusing on the acquisition of useful knowledge. Polytechnics made it possible to introduce a wide range of subjects into the higher education sphere and had an influence on how universities operate.
