New tricks for old dogs

Article Abstract:

The popularity of the University of the Third Age has grown to include some 80,000 members in 1998, from just 40 in 1981, when it was launched. It offers almost 150 different activities to people over the age of retirement. Older people have been calling on the government to provide more funding to increase the availability of adult education for older people. Management of Agepower, a commercially run learning organisation, anticipates the company will be worth 25 million pounds sterling by 2001. Some 25.2% of the UK population will be aged over 65 years by 2040, from 15.7% in 1995.

Is the Square Mile colour blind?

Article Abstract:

Representatives of London, England's new universities point to the high proportion of ethnic minority students at their institutions to explain their higher than average graduate unemployment rates. Institutions such as the University of East London argue that there is an entrenched culture of racism in the City of London. London Guildhall University vice provost Deian Hopkin concedes that many City employers may not understand that they are guilty of racial exclusion. He explains that blacks and Asians simply do not fit City firms' archetypal employment mould.
