Official reports 'dish the dirt'

Article Abstract:

Universities in the UK have been forced own up to quality-control weaknesses, falling standards and blunders as a result of a Government initiative which gives the public access to previously secret reports produced by external examiners. The reports, published on the new Teaching Quality Information website, reveal concerns about issues such as students passing exams when not justified by performance, overly generous marking, a poor grasp of English by overseas students and the need to provide remedial support for weaker students.

Watchdog warning over state intrusion

Article Abstract:

Universities in the UK could face Ofsted-style intrusive inspections if the current academic standards monitoring system cannot show that it is truly independent, according to Sam Younger, new chairman of higher education watchdog the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA). Younger's comments indicate that the QAA will continue to maintain an uncompromising approach to standards reporting as the counterbalance to its "light-touch" audit regime.
