Oxford mulls private future

Article Abstract:

Sir Colin Lucas, vice-chancellor of Oxford University, has fuelled speculation that Oxford could go private and charge tuition fees of as much as UKPd15,000/yr with a critique of the government's plans for higher education. In his critique, delivered in the form of an oration, Lucas warns that as things stand, British undergraduates bring "a net financial loss to the university", that public funding for the university is "woefully below cost" and that the university would not enter into any bargain with the government that resulted in a lowering of the university's admissions principles.
