Article Abstract:

King's College, London, England, Professor Emeritus and Author Patrick Wall was the co-originator of the theory the nervous system was responsible for controlling the strength of pain signals passing to the brain. He has been investigating pain for 40 years. His latest book on the subject, 'Pain: The Science of Suffering' is due to be published Jul 1999. When he started his research into pain Wall was asked to discontinue his work by some eminent medical professionals. Wall admits he is experiencing pain from developing prostate and bone cancer.

Article Abstract:

There are currently only a small number of universities in the UK offering professional or taught doctorate courses. Some observers believe that the taught doctorate represents a dilution of the concept of the doctorate, but this approach, which combines teaching with a lengthy dissertation, has in fact proved increasingly popular, especially in business administration, education, psychology and engineering. Taught doctorate students are generally highly motived senior professionals, and would not tolerate low standards.
