Pattern Maker

Article Abstract:

Pattern Maker is a graphics software package for ages six to adult. It allows users to create repetitive and semi-repetitive patterns. Icons which remind the user which keys to hit are at the top of the screen. Below the icons is a matrix which divides a block into sixteen squares. A cursor is moved to change or add colors from to square to square. After the block is designed, it may be rotated, mirrored, changed in color, or inverted. Repetitive functions can be programmed, and patterns can be saved. This can be a very sophisticated program, with art and crafts applications. It can also be used in math for area and perimeter problems, or in chemistry and biology for diagramming molecules. Its cost is $39.95, and it runs on the Apple II, II+, IIc, IIe, Commodore 64, and IBM PC.

EasyWriter is a RAM-based word processor that comes on a single disk with a manual and reference card. It is self-loading and menu-driven. Its features include full-screen editing; variable margins; variable line spacing; insert and delete by character, word or line; an undelete function; two levels of menus; on-screen help; automatic pagination; search and replace; justified margins; headers and titles; block move and copy; line centering; word count; and linking or appending files. EasyWriter is more powerful than other similarly priced packages, but is more difficult to use. However, a well-written manual and easy to understand menus compensate for its complexity. EasyWriter's cost is $175 and it runs on the IBM PC microcomputer.
