Prince stands accused in honours row

Article Abstract:

The scientific prejudices of Prince Charles have been blamed for the failure of leading scientists to be honoured. Colin Blakemore, the chief executive of the Medical Research Council, is believed to be considering his position after indications emerged that the reason he was not awarded a knighthood was because he had been involved in animal research and that one of the key figures that blacklisted him for speaking out about the benefits of animal experimentation was Prince Charles. In February 2003, Oxford University academics boycotted the opening of a charitable research institute by Prince Charles as a result of instructions that Blakemore should not attend. Others have also missed out on honours as a result of the Prince's beliefs, and Derek Burke, a former government advisor who has been critical of the Prince's views on genetically modified foods, stated that there is a perception that if you speak out against the Prince, then it will be held against you and that the honours system is being used as a way to suppress dissent.

Royalties coup boosts science

Article Abstract:

The Medical Research Council (MRC) has sealed a US$255 million intellectual property deal with Abbott (US), a pharmaceutical company. The payment is in lieu of future royalties for Humira, a new treatment for arthritis developed with the use of technology derived from research conducted at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England, and the Scripps Research Institute in California.
