Radical without revolutionary zeal

Article Abstract:

The roots of chancellor of the exchequer Gordon Brown's pragmatic socialism are traced back to his days as a student at Edinburgh University, when he challenged the established order and the university management and won. Paul Addison, one of Brown's lecturers at the time he was a student and now director of Edinburgh's Centre for Second World War Studies, suggests that many people did not really understand the person they were dealing with in Brown and that Brown was neither a gesture politician or a romantic rebel, rather he was someone who believed in democratic socialism with practical plans.
