Repression or reform? Human rights in China?

Article Abstract:

China's human rights record has remained questionable despite the country's ratification of UN-supported covenants on human rights. Any change in the human rights situation in China will be determined largely by political events shaping the country rather than pressures exerted by the international community.

China and United States relations: a transformation in policy

The relation between America and China that was the best since 1989 is discussed. President George Bush proclaimed China a strategic competitor and asserted that U.S. policy in Asia should be oriented toward American allies in the region, including Taiwan.
