Reunited with unrest

Article Abstract:

The Israelis have allowed the president of Bir Zeit university to return after nearly 20 years in exile. The deal was made as part of the ongoing peace talks. Bir Zeit university was the only place in Israel where Palestinians could enter higher education, many left to study overseas. After problems with the Israeli authorities Bir Zeit was closed from 1988 to 1992. There are still considerable problems for the Palestinians as their areas are sealed off, making many unemployed and leading to further unrest.

Candlelit anger of divided nation; the culture of violence on Lebanon's campuses

Article Abstract:

Although the Lebanon has in theory been at peace for two years, there are still violent incidents at the Universite Lebanaise. Facilities for students are very poor at this university, although the seven private universities are in better shape. Restoring the Universite Lebanaise is likely to be a low priority for the government, who arecommitted to improving communications and public facilities for the general population of Beirut.
