Roads scholars row for recruitment

Article Abstract:

Murray State University in Kentucky has made radical changes in order to address a student dropout rate of 50%. The problem was conceived as being due to feelings of isolation and lack of involvement in a large impersonalised organisation so, in the autumn of 1996, the university with its 8,600 students was divided into eight residential colleges. Each college has its own constitution, governing body, crest and flag and it is hoped that this will increase pride and involvement. The plan was based on the system at England's Oxford University.

Graduates get back to business

Article Abstract:

Master of Business Administration (MBA) courses are attracting more students in the US. The degree was seen as a route to earning more money in the late 1980s then became less popular in the early 1990s recession. Potential students are less concerned about taking time off work in 1996. They also feel that employers expect them to have this qualification, and that itt provides some protection in an environment where downsizing has become common.
