Students studying multimedia design will find their choice of new tools will be reduced as developers make applications which can be used for several tasks. Some are being utilized by those creating academic web sites. Macromedia Fireworks is a new application which can be used for drawing and for bitmap manipulation. Fireworks is produced in different versions for NT, Windows 95 and Mackintosh. The Freeway (Mac) web application may be of particular use to graphic designers new to the working online. Macromedia Dreamweaver works very successfully with other Macromedia applications.

University spin-offs in the south of England may find it easier to get funding following the launch of two new investment networks in Portsmouth - the Solent Investment Opportunity Network - and Thames Valley - the Thames Valley Investment Network. Both of these new networks have been modelled by Oxford Innovation (Oxford, UK) on its successful Oxfordshire Investment Opportunity Network, which brokered 14 deals worth over UKPd3 mil between business angels and fledgling companies in 2002.
