S African v-c warns UK over divisions

Article Abstract:

Barney Pityana, vice-chancellor of the University of South Africa (Unisa), has warned the British government that it risks trampling on university autonomy and academic freedoms as it attempts to reform higher education. Pityana, who was in the UK to meet UK-based students and alumni of Unisa, warned that the government's attempts to force universities to play to their strengths through, among other things, a further concentration of research funding, threaten to undermine the fundamental purpose of universities.
