Sausage factory culture puts the squeeze on ideas

Article Abstract:

Rights of academics to question conventional thinking and pursue often unfashionable and controversial ideas are being threatened by the 'sausage-factory mentality' which is taking over universities, academics will be told at the annual AUT conference. A series of motions to be debated at the conference will paint an apocalyptic vision of higher education in Britain, arguing that universities have lost their way under commercial pressure, the weight of market forces and 'magaerialism'.

Students satisfied--official

Article Abstract:

University students in England are overwhelmingly satisfied with their degree courses and their lecturers, according to the Government's National Student Satisfaction Survey, a survey of about 170,000 final year students in 41 different subject areas. The survey, which cost UKPd2 million, is the first of its kind in England.

LSE leads revolt against QAA

Article Abstract:

The future of the UK's Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) looks uncertain after the London School of Economics said it would break away from the QAA. Other top universities, trade unions and MPs have criticized the QAA, despite government pledges to review the framework of the QAA.
