Science chief quits after PhD scrutiny

Article Abstract:

Barry McSweeney, chief science adviser for the Irish Government, has resigned as a result of the revelation that his PhD is from Pacific Western University, an unaccredited US university. The resignation is a blow to the Irish Government as McSweeney was to have played a pivotal role in its soon-to-be-launched Euro5 billion research strategy to 2013.

EU adds ethics to Framework

Article Abstract:

The European Union's 6th Framework Programme on research (FP6) looks set to cut funding to some areas of marine science, and research that involves chimpanzees. The cuts to primate research would be an attempt to address ethical concerns of the European Parliament.

Secretive institutes forced to rethink

The European Court of Justice has ruled that European Union institutions should give detailed explanations for refusing access to public documents. This ruling follows a case brought by Aldo Kuijer, a Dutch academic.
