Sexism charge prompts closure

Article Abstract:

The University of British Columbia has responded to sexual harassment allegations by closing admissions. An investigation was carried out following complaints from 12 graduate students. The report found hostility to women and members of ethnic minorities in the department of political science. The report does not state whether cases are proven, nor does it name offenders or those who complained. The head of the department argues that professors who are innocent of harassment may suffer attacks on their reputation.

Changes to the state constitution of Oklahoma mean that universities there are now allowed to form partnerships with the private sector and commercialize technology. In 2001, Oklahoma University is expected to become the 12th biggest earner of royalties amongst US universities.
