Sitting pretty with Mary Allan

Article Abstract:

The new Mary Allan Building at the teacher training institute Homerton College in Cambridge, England, completely changes the shape of the campus to provide a more conventional collegiate environment. The 6.5 million pounds sterling building incorporates a teaching wing, auditorium and library, with the campus designed to give education a more academic prominence. Principal Kate Pretty is directly responsible for the academic and physical changes at the college. She has won major teaching contracts for the college and secured the funding for the new building.

Article Abstract:

The Institute of Child Health's (ICH's) buildings in Bloomsbury, United Kingdom, have been designed to provide an environment within which scientists can exchange ideas as well as work in state-of-the-art laboratories. The three main activities of office-based research, laboratory research and teaching were separated into different buildings, with architects ORMS designing an aesthetic roof extension, library and 300-seat auditorium as part of the project. The building programme has helped attract major international researchers to the ICH site.

Urbane sprawl: the pursuit of the perfect habitat

Article Abstract:

University campus managers must take into account both academic and architectural concerns when considering expansion, with the needs of existing and future students having to be ascertained. The managers must predict how the buildings will change with time, how they will be used and how they will combine with the neighbourhood. Planning should include focus on pedestrian routes, landscaping, building flexibility and site potential, with the facility built from the centre outwards and the plan used as a tool.
