Size 'not crucial' for university title award

Article Abstract:

The Council for Industry and Higher Education argues that corporate universities should be given the power to award degrees and be allowed to use the title officially, stating that size should not matter in gaining degree-awarding powers. Such a move would pave the way for small colleges and companies to become universities. Currently, only institutions with at least 4,000 full-time-equivalent students can be given degree-awarding powers, but the government is currently involved in a consultation process on the matter.

Protect college title, heads say

Article Abstract:

Use of the word "college" by educational institutions should be subject to the same level of regulation as the title "university" in order to prevent bogus operators from using it, according to the Association of Colleges. The Association is concerned that the activities of some private organisations that provide inferior-quality services and are often little more than a front for illegal immigration could tarnish the reputations of its member institutions.

College powers may spawn universities

Article Abstract:

It has been predicted that government plans to allow colleges of further education to award foundation degrees could result in creation of a new batch of universities. Proposals allowing colleges to apply for power to award two-year foundation degrees are contained in the Further Education Bill.
