Snow stops study on West Bank

Article Abstract:

In the occupied West Bank, Najah University has had to close due to the cold after record snowfalls, having only recently reopened after a three-and-a-half-year closure by the Israelis. The six universities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip were shut when the Palestinian civil uprising began but in the last year and a half they have begun to reopen. However, the university at Birzeit has still not reopened. Many university staff have moved away to more secure jobs and the loss of funds has hit them all hard. Najah has had to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in repairs and replacements.

Their finery hour

Article Abstract:

Graduation ceremonies are becoming increasingly popular and elaborate in the UK. They are coming to resemble the US model with photographs and year books. The Open University has ceremonies which may involve spouses and children of students since many mature students do Open University courses. Prisoners may attend graduation ceremonies, and people in hospital beds can have degrees conferred on them formally. The ceremony is a rite of passage and is thus not likely to disappear.

A good return on investment; formal partnerships between commerce and academe

Article Abstract:

UK universities are being encouraged to work on projects in collaboration with the private sector. The US led the way in partnerships of this kind, and notable scientific discoveries are attributed to these links. Those British universities that do attract industrial funding find that often it is overseas companies that are interested rather than local ones.
