Space for the chattering classes

Article Abstract:

Universities in both the US and the UK have so far failed to respond to the challenges of the information age. However, there are already signs that students are no longer prepared to attend conventional campuses at conventional times and to participate in conventional types of study. Some observers believe that this will eventually lead to universities become part of virtual reality, with physical campuses no longer existing. Others feel that the physical campus must withstand latest developments in communications technology, especially the Internet.

Riding shotgun into frontierland

Article Abstract:

Higher education will change radically in the next twenty five years as changes throughout the world result in the influx of serious students to the University system. Access to the Internet and English as an internationally understood language make national borders much less important; regional power centres may result from the change. Other issues expected to appear in the future are the need for continuous education throughout life and the demise of free higher education.

The chattering sexes

Article Abstract:

The conversations amongst women friends are usually constructed jointly, with the group taking priority over the individual. Talk often overlaps with two or more voices contributing to the conversation at the same time. Men's friendly conversations differ, with usually one speaker talking at any one time, and overlapping speech is avoided. Men also converse more about impersonal topics compared to women.
