Loosen up ministers

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the UK government's "The Future of Higher Education" white paper. It is argued that this white paper is simultaneously the best and worst higher education white paper for 30 years, getting most things right in principal, but getting too many things wrong in practice. It is suggested that what the government needs to do is reiterate the principals contained with the white paper, but relax the practical prescriptions and challenge institutions to develop their own practical solutions to the policy questions.

Variable top-up fees: invariably unpopular

Article Abstract:

An analysis of whether Labour MPs will really let the Labour Party's higher education bill fail. Labour MPs such as Mark Fisher, MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central, states that he would rather see the bill fail than support it, but others, such as Frank Dobson, MP for Holborn and St Pancras, note that if the introduction of variable fees was dropped from the bill, then they might consider abstaining from the vote on the bill, rather than voting against it.
