Ten ways to scupper a VLE

Article Abstract:

Some diehard traditionalists are appalled by the desperate scramble of university managers to install virtual learning environments (VLE). Ten tips are given to help ensure that the installation of these systems does not go to plan. Tips include purchasing the wrong VLE for the level of experience and expertise of the staff, purchasing the wrong VLE for the external environment, underestimating demand and growth, and leaving tricky procedures, such as student registration and interoperability matters, until the end of the installation process.

Article Abstract:

The senior vice-president for academics at KIT eLearning, partner of the University of Liverpool worldwide, details the challenges that face the instructors who preside over the University of Liverpool's virtual classrooms. It is suggested that the most important lesson that can be taken from the problems that these instructors face is that nothing can be taken for granted and that each issue needs to be given as much advance thought as possible, with advice being sought from diverse people around the world.

Article Abstract:

An analysis of e-learning and blogs and how they can be used to enhance the higher education experience. It is argued that just putting written materials online for students to access does not make for a constructive e-learning environment and that campus-based academics need to take a closer look at the way they approach e-learning.
