The Chernobyl game

Article Abstract:

There were many sensitive issues involved in deciding about the future viability of the Chernobyl nuclear power station in Ukraine, according to John Surrey, who in summer 1996 was requested to chair a panel of investigation into future options for Chernobyl. He found that there were strong arguments in favour of improving existing energy operations in Ukraine, rather than going ahead with plans for the Khmelnitsky 2 and Rovno 4 nuclear power stations. In particular, there were other priorities for funding from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Delivering the impossible

Article Abstract:

The Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CLRC) manages projects that research councils are unable to pursue themselves, assisting them with the most advanced research and operating major equipment on their behalf. Eighty percent of the CLRC's work is carried out on behalf of universities, says Chairman Bert Westwood. The CLRC is skilled in predicting the type of equipment that will become necessary, as much of its apparatus takes years to construct. Industry should work closer with the research laboratories, says commercial director Allyson Reed.

How long is a bit of superstring?; working in 26 dimensions instead of four

Article Abstract:

Superstring theory is a branch of physics and a means of exploring the particles which comprise the universe. Its basis lies in 26 dimensions instead of the present four, although they can stretch to infinity. The figures used in superstring theory can be interpreted differently, which is a criticism of the theory.
