The high school experience: Proposals for improvement

Article Abstract:

A study that showed that American 15-yeard olds ranked 27th out of 39 countries in math literacy reflects the sorry state of American High School students' performance in the concerned subject. US President George Bush, sensing an urgent need to reform American High Schools, has proposed a$1.5 billion plan which includes a series of programs to help high-school students graduate with "skills necessary to succeed" with the main thrust being towards testing mathematical skills in the 9th, 10th and 11th grades so that the children would become more competitive.

Lunch at school: Not always a good thing

Article Abstract:

A debate is presented regarding the school lunch program, a huge federal enterprise, and the desire to ensure a nutritional lunch, which collides with ingrained cafeteria practices, powerful agribusiness interests, and children's tastes. It is believed that the desire for a nutritional lunch that fights obesity is overshadowed by political and corporate considerations that have little to do with what is good for children.
