The loneliness of the latchkey child

Article Abstract:

Research by Drs. Lynette and Thomas Long indicates that more than one-third (or about 10 million) elementary school children are latchkey children whose parents are at work when they return from school. Common characteristics of these children seemed to be loneliness, fearfulness and an unhappiness with their situations. Solutions to the problems of latchkey children have included independence training and community-funded after-school programs.
