The lost supper

Article Abstract:

British commentators view the apparent decline in family meals as indicative of wider social problems, including the disintegration of the traditional family unit. However, the basis of their arguments is unclear as there appear to have been no academic studies focusing on how often parents and children eat together. The arguments of social scientists seem to be based on research into mealtime patterns undertaken by the mass media industry and social myths. There is insufficient evidence that family meals no longer occur.

A city of lost hopes

Article Abstract:

War has had a serious impact on Sarajevo, Bosnia. This includes the university, where classes have had to be held in cellars. Students have helped with teaching after the departure of some academics. Exams still take place, despite the war. This includes doctorates and masters, which have been completed by candle light. Travel to departments of the university may involve risking one's life. Academic initiatives have continued despite four years being isolated from the outside world.

Reclaiming a lost pearl

Article Abstract:

Author, Pearl Buck, won a Nobel Prize for literature but she has never attracted much interest from scholars. Buck was brought up in China and through her books she tried to draw attention to the lives of women in pre-revolutionary China. Buck was not popular in America because of her views on segregation, discrimination and white imperialism. Readers have to understand a little about Chinese history and its relations with the US if they are to fully appreciate her work.
