Three ways to free art and design

Article Abstract:

Research degree regulations appropriate to other fields may stifle research in art and design, especially an emphasis on dissertations, and other forms of examination may be more appropriate. Students should display rigour, originality and scepticism, as with other disciplines, but design students need to focus on usefulness as well as truth, and 'know how' should be seen as a valid aim in design research. There is a need for a national debate on the issue, rather than setting up new types of research degree, separate from PhD and MPhil research qualifications which have the advantage of being internationally recognized.

Caff society on a voyage of discovery; ways to make science and museums fit together in more exciting combinations

Article Abstract:

Museums are increasingly offering hands-on and multi-media experiences for their visitors, particularly children. Science museums recognise that their visitors have very different requirements and expectations, and that a visit to a museum is a social occasion. Although visits to a science museum may not add to scientific knowledge, visitors are encouraged to use them as they wish. Visitors may see museums as 'computers', 'commodities' or 'playpens'.
