Time to speak up against the doom merchants

Article Abstract:

Academics and scientists should use their expertise to give balanced opinions in public debates. Often the public are frightened by incorrect information and they could be helped by scientists giving their unbiased views during a debate. Scientists were not prepared for the public concern over genetically modified (GM) crops. Some observers point out information on GM food was often relayed by people without expertise in the area. The academics also failed to speak out against the forecasts of what would happen following the break down of technology due to the Year 2000 bug.
