Too little wind, too much hot air

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to how geography affects events are examined from the point of view that it is not possible to make sense of human history without taking its contexts - such as climates and humankind's animal nature - into consideration. It is argued that in order to properly understand human history, it is necessary to restore relationships between historians and geographers and that, in fact, disciplinary boundaries should be uncongenial to historians if they are trying to understand all elements of humanity's past.

Participants in a historical 'soap'

Article Abstract:

The principal lecturer in history at Edge Hill College explains how he used an interactive website to bridge the gap between teaching and research and offer his students a new learning experience outside of the traditional lecture, textbook and seminar structure. Using the materials on the website and its conferencing facility enabled the students to start shaping ideas, contest arguments and interpretations and defend their conclusions if they differed from those reached by other students.

What future for study of past?

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the government's white paper for higher education and how it has affected the study of history are examined. It is argued that the government's preoccupation with science and science-based subjects is jeopardising study and research in history, despite the fact that the number of undergraduate history applicants rose to 7,638 for 2003, vs 6,606 in 1997.
