Treasury to focus on top 10

Article Abstract:

The Treasury wants to use a new metrics-based research assessment system which would concentrate research funding further, and possibly create a top tier of no more than 10 institutions, according to claims by vice-chancellors. The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) believes funding should be largely concentrated between 25 universities, while the Treasury believes it should be 10, according to one vice-chancellor.
