'Twitchers' they can't do without

Article Abstract:

The important work of the amateur scientists was acknowledged at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting for the year 2000. Ornithologists felt amateurs had a vital role in helping to carry out research. Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology Director of Education and Citizen Science Rick Boney pointed out how he was able to use the Internet to gather data from amateurs all around the world. Other speakers at the meeting acknowledged how amateurs were able to help with the gathering of information, such as in astronomy.

Article Abstract:

A Vietnamese typhoid strain has been analyzed and part of its DNA has been found to be similar to that of bubonic plague. Typhoid is a serious probem in Vietnam, and the microbe responsible is constantly mutating, which makes it more difficult and expensive to treat.
