'I nearly lost most of my hair setting light to a fairy cake, the meerkats escaped and I was bitten by the lobster. Twice. But I'd do it all again'

Article Abstract:

In the light of the news that television channel Five has won the right to broadcast the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures, a personal account is given of presenting the lectures. It is noted that presenting the Christmas Lectures is not like normal lecturing as there are factors such as TV cameras to take into account, but, despite the hard work, they are enjoyable to do.

'It's not scientists' job to get support for animal research; their job is to explain facts so others can make up their minds'

Article Abstract:

Hiding facts about animal research and failing to enter an open debate, in an effort to avoid acts of terrorism and violence, is likely to further damage understanding of such work. The culture of fear surrounding animal research is understandable, but all institutions undertaking such research have an obligation to be honest and open.
