UK urged to review energy research

Article Abstract:

The UK's investment in energy research and development is at a "pathetically low" level, according to the Commons select committee on science and technology, which plans to challenge the government's policy of support for a broad range of energy research. Desmond Turner, the Labour MP responsible for drawing together the committee's report, states that he believes that by international standards, British investment in renewable energy is pathetically low and he notes that he is worried by the government's moves to shift responsibility on to industry.

Brown set to double cash for science

Article Abstract:

Chancellor Gordon Brown is expected to announce by end-June 2004 plans to more than double spending on science and innovation over the next 10 years. The settlement, which far outstrips the expectations of scientists who had contributed to the Labour Government's Treasury science review, will enable the UK to compete for the first time with nations such as the United States when it comes to investment in science.
