UKPd1 bn boost if bill survives

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the UK government's higher education bill by the Higher Education Policy Institute estimates that the introduction of top-up fees could result in the generation of UKPd1.44 bil for universities, assuming that 85% of students pay the maximum fee and 15% of fee income is set aside for student support bursaries. This would take the average level of funding that universities receive per student back, by 2008, to the level it was in 1994. Universities currently generate UKPd1.33 bil/yr in fee income from the existing UKPd1,175 fee.

An analysis of the Department for Education and Skills' proposals for the restructuring of the university admissions system in the United Kingdom and the introduction of a system under which students will apply for university places once they know their A level results. It is argued that the proposals do not make an adequate case for change and, therefore, the current system should be left alone.
