Unbalanced equation

Article Abstract:

Fears for the future of university mathematics courses in the UK have grown following the confirmation by Hull University that it intends to close its maths department and the announcement by Nottingham Trent University that it plans to review its provision. The London Mathematical Society has warned that parts of the UK are now in danger of becoming mathematical "wastelands" and has called on the government to intervene and help support the subject.

Collaboration is the way ahead

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the role of further education colleges in the United Kingdom, the part they have to play in delivering the vocational element of the 14-to-19 reforms and the place they occupy in the Government's Skills Strategy and targets for improving adult basic skills. Challenges that further education colleges will face include dealing with increased numbers of students, managing resources and providing a positive educational experience.

Teaching plagiarism

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the way forward for universities and other educational institutions in dealing with the growing problem of plagiarism. It is argued that universities should reassess how they define plagiarism and, instead of asking students to produce knowledge in their essays, they should be asked to effectively assess and manipulate existing knowledge to support an argument.
