Unique insight into the mists of infancy

Article Abstract:

A 20,000 pounds sterling studentship has been granted for a three-year research project to examine the development of blind babies. The researcher will assess how the pattern of communication development is affected by visual impairment. Language between baby and parent generally commences with eye contact and smiles, with the parent later responding to the child's needs by determining what he is looking at. The researcher, herself blind, will also examine if blind children can use touch to develop pretend play in the same way as sighted children.

Move over the Bill, here comes The Lab

Article Abstract:

Science could be better undertood by the public if it were represented more on television. A Public Awareness of Science award for drama has been set up in the UK with sponsorship from the public and private sectors. Scientists themselves tend to lose credibility when they appear on TV and explain scientific ideas to the public, so non-scientists have tended to apply for the award. They have to carry out research to make their dramas appear credible.
