We need you, but you can't come in

Article Abstract:

An examination of the impact that new US restrictions on visas are having on people who come from states that the US regards as "terrorist-friendly". The case of Mohamed Hassan, the Sudanese-born chief executive of the Third World Academy of Sciences, is used as an example. Hassan, who has previously made frequent visits to the US, has an impeccable academic record, is held in high status and has even met with George Bush Sr, has been waiting for over eight months for his new visa to be issued. Hassan, and others, believe that the restrictions currently being put in place will damage the future of scientific collaboration with the US.

No release from house of cards

Article Abstract:

The American Association for the Advancement of Science has called for the US Government to either release or charge Huda Ammash, the microbiologist the Government claimed was the head of Iraq's biowarfare programme. Ammash has been in US custody since May 2003 without charge, despite the overwhelming evidence that Iraq did not have a biowarfare programme for anybody to be head of.
