Battery Update: Recharged Ad, Promotion Campaigns To Power '84 Market

Article Abstract:

Battery sales during the remainder of 1984 will be supported by advertising and promotion rather than the introduction of new products. Zinc carbons and alkalines still dominate the market and new developments in lithium are the forefront of new technology. Polaroid has introduced a six volt lithium power pack for medical equipment and other devices with a use life near sixty hours. Saft is marketing a standby power supply for computers which helps avoid file logs in a power failure. Panasonic, Saft and GE are all introducing AAAs, which have seen increased sales as a result of downsizing. Sales of rechargeable batteries have surged fifty per cent in 1984.

Typewriter Suppliers Rap Out Upscale Message: Expanding Market Spurs Innovation, Diversification

Article Abstract:

Typewriter suppliers are upgrading their products with features and lowering costs of letter quality printers and computer interface models. With wider product lines, retailers will have to be able to point customers to the right machine. Brother will introduce the Type-a-Graph in the second half. The Type-a-Graph will use ballpoint pens to draw eight kinds of graphs and be able to print vertically as well as horizontally. SCM is introducing nine new electronic typewriters. Fully featured technology is coming to portable typewriters. Casio and IBM are concentrating on the office market.

The market for pager systems is growing at a phenomenal rate. Most sales are made in conjunction with common carriers. Business for carriers has increased greatly since the FCC doubled the number of available frequencies. Paging technology is outstripping the needs of the market. The greatest market for pagers is beepers. National and international networks for pagers are being laid in place. Greatest growth for pagers is seen in business uses. PageAmerica of New York has launched an aggressive retail campaign and established a relationship with Sears Business Centers.
