Article Abstract:

There is a lack of direct grants for the refurbishment of general buildings which are usually considered within the context of larger schemes. Most grants are aimed at enhancing the built environment or providing economic benefits. English Heritage offers Conservation Area Grants to buildings in conservation areas where there is an agreed scheme and the Department of the Environment offers House Renovation Grants aimed at those with limited means to undertake essential work.

Mercury vapour lamps interfere with the bat defence of tympanate moths (Operophtera spp.; Geometridae)

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the effect of light on the evasive flight behavior of moths by using bursts of ultrasound from a mercury vapor lamp. The light quantitatively inhibited the moths' flight response at close range. In comparison, moths flying about in open space always responded to the sound without interference from the light. Thus, mercury vapor lamps interfere with the flight behavior of moths.
